Look at My Treasures!

What an amazing way to spend my birthday! Mining for Herkimer Diamonds with my mom. These are not real diamonds, they are a form of quartz crystal that actually look like real diamonds! We were instructed by the mine owner that once we entered the grove we should find a hole, go in it and start digging! Wow! Sounded like fun! When we entered the grove I noticed glittering here and there and when I knealed down to get a closer look, sure enough there were crystals. It had rained the day before so the dirt was wet and muddy. I noticed that the closer I got to the ground, it was easier to see the glistening of the crystals. I could smell the earth, the dirt, it was so grounding and so Zen! I rubbed off the mud from what looked liked a rock and there was a crystal peeking through. I was barely able to remove the dirt but I just kept filling up my bucket with treasures. Some of the specimens were called Drusy which is another form of quartz found in clusters. We headed back to the hotel after 5 hours of collecting gems. We had no idea what we would find when we washed off the rocks. It was so exciting as we uncovered many beauties! I am truly blown away by this experience. These gems grow in the earth! Some perfectly cut, some broken but still so beautiful. I am looking forward to my next mining adventure. I am hooked!!
